March 19, 2012 – Regular Night & Initiation
The work of the evening was an initiation of a worthy candidate. We would like to welcome to The Builders’s Lodge our new brother. May your journey into freemasonry be rewarding to you and all brethren that will cross your path.
We also had the pleasure and honour to receive W.Bro. Douglas Sonnenburg and brethren of Mississippi Lodge No. 147 this evening. A Star Among Us!
Many brethren, past and present, have accomplished great things in, and for, society. Many others have a person in their lives with a direct link to this Lodge in particular and who have accomplishments of their own.
We would like to extend our congratulations to Andrée Riffou, the wife of W. Bro. Richard Loomes, for her appearance on CTV News at Noon with Leanne Cusack to showcase her business; C’est Bon Cooking.

He then introduced two guest speakers from University of Ottawa Skills & Simulation Centre (OSSC) which recently opened in October 2010: Dr. Viren Naik, Medical Director and Dr. Stanley Hamstra, Research Director. Jean Lteif, All of the presenters did well and we had some good questions from the goodly number of non-masons who were there. In fact, for some that attended, the F2F event intensified their interest in the Craft in general and our lodge in particular that they asked to join our great fraternity. Thanks to you everyone who came out.
Our social and fun activities will continue with an Ottawa 67s hockey game slated for 2:00 pm March 14th followed by supper. Come out and join us. See Bro. Jim White for tickets. Brian Bullock to join us.
January 18, 2010 – DDGM Night, Terence McDonald Initiation
Happy New Year to you all. The start of a new year is an opportune time to look back and reflect on our accomplishments and lessons we can take with us. The past year was an active one for the lodge as we tried some different things to improve while continuing to keep the landmarks that make us who we are as Masons. As we ended the year with our last meeting, we had the pleasure to welcome a new Entered Apprentice into Freemasonry, Bro. Prince Penie.
The New Year is also the time to look forward and plan anew our future activities and accomplishments to be achieved as a group in this great fraternity. Whether they be social with family & friends, fraternal within the brotherhood, learning from a knowledgeable speaker, service within our community, or benevolence to those in need, you can be assured that the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth will permeate throughout them all.
However, there could not be a better night to kick-off the New Year, not to mention someone’s Masonic career, than our DD night. Our event was kicked-off with some wine and cheese in the lounge followed by a fantastic Festive Board including coq au vin and all the accoutrements. There was an excellent turnout of members and visitors with over 60 people for the dinner including 12 of the 14 WM in District 2, and even more for the meeting.
During the meeting, we welcomed R.W. Bro. Jack Ledger, on his official visit to The Builders’ Lodge along with a good number of travelling companions. We initiated Mr. Terrence McDonald into the mysteries and privileges of Ancient Freemasonry, with some much appreciated support from W. Bro. George Pacey and R.W. Bro. Robert Taylor who filled in at the last minute for people who were waylaid. W. Bro. Robert Smith from Madawaska Lodge in Arnprior gave a special charge and presented a Masonic VSL to the new initiate.
Dec 21 – Initiation
While the evening was close to Christmas and we were missing our Junior Warden, Dan Cooper (who had just had a nasty fall) we had a good turnout for our Regular meeting. Many members were filling in as some people and of course, a key player in any initiation – the Junior Warden, were away.
We had a positive ballot for a candidate for initiation, Mr. Terrence McDonald. Following the ballot, we conducted an initiation whereby Mr. Prince Penie began his Masonic journey and became Bro. Prince Penie. Many of you have got to know Prince and Marie as they have been out to a number of lodge events. We are sure that Bro. Penie will find freemasonry rewarding and The Builders Lodge is pleased to have him as its newest member.
Nov 30 - Tim LaForce Third degree
It was a pleasure for the lodge to confer the Third Degree on Bro. Tim LaForce. Both he and Bro. Sylvain Bouchard proved themselves admirably in both the Second and Third degrees respectively. We followed with some desserts and fellowship upstairs after lodge.

There was a supper followed by some public ceremonies. Masons were encouraged to wear their regalia and bring their family and friends. W. Bro. Loomes’ son, Dominic Riffou-Loomes, performed the Flower Talk which is a talk about the importance of filial love, and specifically the love for a Mother, and the Mother’s love for you.
The Builders Lodge was well represented when Bro. Jim White presented donations to both the Ottawa Chapter of DeMolay and DeMolay Ontario. He spoke about the importance of supporting our youth and commended the youth on the excellent performance and display of ritual during their ceremonies. V.W. Bro. Winston MacDonald and W. Bro. Loomes were also in attendance, along with their lovely wives.
Nov 21 Masonic ChIP (Child Identification Program) event
Our lodge had an important milestone by holding its first Masonic ChIP event. This event provides the parents or guardians with a kit containing vital information that can link into the Amber Alert system. Our members volunteered to prepare and provide 80 kits that will increase the chances of finding a lost child. This program gives a very public face to what Masonry is about. Special thanks to Bro. Steve Gordon from The Regional Group for sponsoring the event to cover the cost of the kits, and thanks to Dovercourt Community Centre for allowing us to use their facilities. For more information about the program, go to www.masonichip.ca.

Nov 16 – Remembrance Service, Guest Speaker and Piper
While talking about remembering those who fought in the war, Winston Churchill is quoted as saying, “Never before have so many owed so few so much”. We must not let the memory fade. This month we had our solemn remembrance service to recognize the contribution of those who fought to protect our freedom and pay tribute to those we have lost. W. Bro. Robert Smith of Madawaska Lodge in Arnprior added to the service by playing his bag pipes.
We also had the pleasure of having a special speaker, Maj. Daniel Lépine who is the Commanding Officer, Canadian Forces Protective Services Unit. It was interesting to learn about what they are doing to protect the political and military leaders in Canada and around the world.
We were also pleased to have a number of non-masons join us for the evening as we had the supper, remembrance service and speaker open to friends and family. Thanks for joining us!
Nov 15 - visit to the Shriners Hospital in Montreal
W. Bro. Loomes and his wife Andrée, had the wonderful opportunity to go on a tour of one of the best known symbols of Masonic charity – the Shriners Hospitals for Children. While there were some discussions about the hospital moving to Ottawa it is staying in Montreal. While we were there, we had the opportunity to meet some of the patients and in fact one of them is on the cover of a recent magazine. The dedication of the staff and the appreciation of the patients and families certainly tugged at the heart and made everyone feel proud to be a Mason.
Nov 5-7 - DeMolay OPC
W. Bro. Richard Loomes and his son, Dominic Riffou-Loomes attended the 2009 OPC or Ontario Provincial Conclave (now referred to as Sessions) in Barrie. There were masons and DeMolay members from across the province including a large contingent from Ottawa.
Activities included the installation of Provincial Jurisdictional Councillors, selection of Provincial Sweetheart, a banquet of 150 strong and lots of fun activities for the DeMolay, Rainbow and Jobs Daughters. Ottawa took home the provincial trophy for the ritual competition, with the team winning in the Ceremony of Light and Dominic Riffou-Loomes winning the Flower Talk.
The installation was also attended by a large number of Grand Lodge officers, led by the Grand Master, M.W. Bro. Raymond Daniels. R.W. Bro. William A. Atkinson, Chairman of the Grand Lodge Youth Initiatives Committee (of which W. Bro. Loomes is also a member) was also in attendance.
Oct 24 - DeMolay Installation
There was also a good delegation from lodge that made it out to support the Ottawa Chapter of DeMolay and witness the installation of the new officers. The meetings are open and you are welcome to attend meetings in your regalia.

Oct 8-12, 2009 - Grand Lodge of California, San Francisco & Columbus Day Parade
While down in San Francisco for a long weekend, W. Bro. Richard Loomes had the occasion to visit the California Masonic Memorial Temple on Nob Hill. It is a large building that is only used for their Grand Communication and is rented out for the rest of the year. A large part of their revenue is gained from parking which comes at a premium in SF.
He was warmly welcomed by two ladies from membership services, Jennifer Banta and Sioban, and then given a tour of the building. The Assistant Grand Secretary, James Banta also gave him a tour of an exhibit and shared some great lodge and membership development information with him.
Oct 1, 2009 - Report from W. Bro. George MacManus trip to Cambodia
While returning on the last leg of our trip to Cambodia to see our son, my wife and I stopped over for a few days in Singapore. We happened upon a building with the square and compass on it and naturally I wanted to have a closer look. Upon entering the outer door I noticed through a glass door a fellow with a white jacket on and a towel over his arm. He beckoned us to come in. Near the entrance was a long bar with a large assortment of regalia and other memorabilia as well as a Templar knight complete with sword, etc.
A list of the different lodges which use the building, representing the Grand Lodges of Scotland, England and Ireland, was also posted. Adjacent to the bar was a restaurant operated by the lodge building. It was open to the public but members received a 10% discount on the purchase of meals. They had a very attractive luncheon with 19 different dishes in steam trays as well as a regular menu. The walls of the dining room were covered with more photographs, etc representing different Masonic subjects. As it was a Saturday I unfortunately was not able to see the lodge room on the second floor.
On the wall next to our table in the dining room was a very interesting description of Masonry as follows:
What is Freemasonry?
- In the Home it’s Kindness
- In Society, it’s Courtesy
- In Business, it’s Honesty
- In Work, it’s Fairness
- Towards the Unfortunate, it’s Pity
- Towards the Wicked, it’s Resistance
- Towards the Week, it’s Help
- Towards the Strong, it’s Trust
- Towards the Penitent, it’s Forgiveness
- Towards the Fortunate, it’s Congratulations
- Towards God, it’s Reverence and Love
- This is Freemasonry

John Saunders.
The evening was further marked by the passing of Bros. Tim LaForce and Sylvain Bouchard to the Fellowcraft degree, them having both proven that they were well prepared. W. Bro. Loomes thanked everyone in the degree team and particularly those who stepped in at the last minute to fill the spots where someone was ill. Our visitor from South of the 49th parallel, R.W. Bro. Edward Harold was officially welcomed to The Builders Lodge and presented with a visitor card.
Prior to lodge, members and welcome visitors participated in a pre-meeting dinner organized by Bro. Dan Cooper. After the nights work many of the members and guests gathered upstairs for refreshments and fellowship.

Aug 7, 2009 - Key Man Conference Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania
W. Bro. Loomes attended Key Man, a week-long DeMolay leadership development camp, in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. It is held on the Patton College Campus which is part of a 2,000 acre site owned by Pennsylvania Grand Lodge that includes the Masonic Village, working farms, hospital / nursing home and hundreds of housing units. On the college there is a chapel with an amazing stained glass window. He also had the opportunity to visit the Abraham C Treichler no. 682 Masonic Lodge in the Masonic Village.
Aug 21, 2009 - Mid-summer letter from the Worshipful Master
The summer has finally arrived although it took its sweet time coming. The hot humid weather that we have experienced is more typical of Ottawa. As the nights get cooler, it won’t be long before we start another Masonic year.
It is humbling to sit in the East again. This year we once again have a great group of officers who will endeavour to advance our lodge and great fraternity by putting on an interesting programme for you, its members. In order to get the most value, you have to do just one small thing – participate!
Part of what is planned this year are:
- Speakers – last year we had a couple of interesting talks on Masonry in Europe and advancements in cancer research. Going forward, we plan to have a number of speakers throughout the year on a variety of topics including confessions of a NATO bodyguard, training police forces around the world from one of our own members, and leaving a legacy for fighting cancer.
- Conferring degrees – these milestones are the more visible markers of the Masonic journey for newer members and we hope to make them as memorable as they should be. While we have lost (we hope temporarily) Bro. Ifrim to Vancouver, we have a number of interested individuals who appear keen to begin their Masonic journey.
- Lodges of discussion – we will have opportunities to discuss a variety of wide ranging topics. Come out to be stimulated, provoked and maybe even inspired. Feel free to forward your topic suggestions on to me.
- Social activities – a number of activities throughout the year that will focus on socializing with families and friends. The next one on our Trestle Board is a BBQ at Vincent Massey Park on September 5th so mark your calendar. If you need a ride, please let us know.
- Community Service – we will be doing a number of activities within our community that will embody the principle of Relief. Examples of this are the Child Identification event on November 21st at the Dovercourt Community Centre and the Dr. John Dobbie Masonic Scholarship, and we hope to do more.
- Festive Boards – our Junior Warden, Bro. Dan Cooper, has proven himself very capable of putting on a feast and I look forward to more in the future. If you have any food restrictions (or favourites), all you have to do is let Dan know.
- Travelling – visiting other lodges is a large part of our fraternity which, unfortunately, many of our newer members don’t experience. I will be travelling throughout our District as well as others and I am looking forward to travelling with you. Please join me.
I have included a copy of trestle board for the year and changes to it will be circulated periodically and can also be found on the website www.thebuilderslodge.org.
I look forward to sitting in lodge with you.
Sincerely and Fraternally
RichardJul 16-18, 2009 - Grand Lodge
A number of the brethren attended the Grand Lodge communication. Most went for the day to vote for the District Deputy Grand Master (DDGM). R.W. Bro. Jack Ledger of Renfrew Lodge was elected on the Wednesday and invested with his regalia the following day. Worshipful Master, Richard Loomes, attended from the Tuesday to Thursday which enabled him to attend a number of workshops, 2 of which were focused on engaging newer members. Both of these sessions were led by the G15 Group – a group of newer / younger Masons helping to strengthen the members’ appreciation of the Craft. Richard along with the Board of General Purposes also witnessed M.W. Bro. Allan Petrisor going through the full initiation ceremony to be made an Honorary member of DeMolay.
June 28, 2009 - Summer Kick-off BBQ

June 23, 2009 - Scholarship Award
We were happy to award the Dr. John Dobbie Masonic Scholarship for 2009 to Margaret Mioduszewski. Margaret is the 8th recipient of this scholarship. As you may recall, this scholarship is sponsored by The Builders’ Lodge in honour of Dr. John Dobbie who was a member of our lodge and a past Grand Master. It is given to a medical student in financial need, with good marks and who has demonstrated a continued commitment to building a better society through volunteering of their time and energy.
We had the opportunity chat with Margaret, just before she was heading off to “rounds”. She is an exceptionally bright young lady and certainly deserving of the award. Through our discussions with her, we walked away with a better appreciation of the financial challenges medical students face. Both Margaret and Dr. Dungy thanked the lodge for its foresight and generosity of establishing the scholarship. Ms. Denyse Campeau, Director of the Advancement Office in the Faculty of Medicine, joined us and expressed her appreciation of the lodge’s continued support to meet this need. Thanks go to all the brethren for supporting this.
For more information about the scholarship and past winners, please see the Scholarship page in the Community Involvement section.
June 12, 2009 - Relay for Life
For the 9th year in a row, the lodge continued with tradition and supported the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This is an incredible event that celebrates life and honours those who have lost the battle. Unlike many of the nights in previous years, this day in June was both dry and warm – to the appreciation of everyone there. This year, we also shared a large tent with the DeMolay team and Pleiad Canada. Thanks to the team for well representing the lodge and supporting our community.
June 8, 2009 - Initiation into Freemasonry
While many of us had the opportunity to meet Sylvain Bouchard and his lovely wife, Rachel, at our Family and F2F event, on this evening we had the pleasure to initiate Sylvain and introduce him to the mysteries and privileges of Ancient Freemasonry. Bro. Bouchard was congratulated by all present and the brethren retired upstairs for some dessert and additional fellowship to close off the evening.

W. Bro. Richard Loomes had the honour to remain as WM of The Builders Lodge and was re-installed into the chair of King Solomon for the ensuring Masonic year. As part of his message he said, “I would like to thank everyone for your support over the past Masonic year. We have had a good year with a number of social and education events (both Masonic and otherwise). The coming year holds great promise and as I stay in the chair of King Solomon for another year, I am looking forward to the continued growth of the brethren in our lodge. As you all progress along your Masonic journey, I know that it will deepen your commitment to the craft in general and to our lodge in particular.” Subsequently, the remaining elected and appointed officers were installed in their respective chairs.
