Gordon Gross

Since becoming a Freemason in 1969, joining the Scottish Rite and obtaining his 32nd degree in 1971, and serving as DDGM for Ottawa District 2 for the year 1990-1991, Gordon had dedicated a lot of his life to the craft. Though new to masonry in 1969, he was not new to hard work and dedication.

Between the years of 1943-45, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and completed a tour of operational flights in Europe with the 433 Squadron, No.6 The Canadian Bomber Group, in RAF Bomber Command, as a Mid Upper Gunner on Halifax Mk 3 aircraft, and a tour as an instructor in gunnery and tactics and in preparation for service in the Pacific War. This was a part of his past he cherished and which brought back many memories. Dave Brown describes Gordon very well in his article which was published in the Ottawa Citizen, dated September 26, 2011.

After his tour of duty, Gordon did not stay idle and continued on to university and later became a world renown geologist.

Some highlights in the career and professional work of Gordon are:

  • Senior Resource Geologist Emeritus, Geological Survey of Canada , Natural Resources Canada
  • A lifetime, member, Elder, and supporter of the United Church of Canada,
  • Graduated with an Honours BA at Queen’s University in 1950 in Mineralogy and Geology, and Received a MA degree in Geology in 1952. Gordon received his Ph.D. in Geology in 1955 at the University of Wisconsin . He taught as professor of Geology at University of Cincinnati , Ohio .
  • Represented Canada in a panel of 8 scientists and engineers that completed the United Nations Survey of World Iron Ore Resources, Published in 1972.
  • Recognized throughout the world for his scientific research on the geology of iron ore resources as Head of the GSC project on Iron Ore Resources of Canada. Conducted extensive scientific liaison and cooperative research work in The Soviet Union, China , India and in Europe .

Gordon has been active and has memberships in numerous professional societies including:

  • Fellow of the Geological Society of America ,
  • The Geological Association of Canada ,
  • The Society of Economic Geologists,
  • The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy,
  • The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy,
  • An Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
